February 2009

Topic 1: Solid State Disk Drives (SSDs), Craig Connor, Fusion-IO

Over time, we have seen the performance of servers and processors make significant, even exponential gains. However, hard disk drive technology has not been able to make these same kinds of performance gains. Solid State Disk drives (SSDs) provide a significant performance benefit compared to hard disk drives. This session will explore NAND-flash based SSDs, specifically from Fusion-IO. Various aspects of this technology will be discussed, including the increased speed, reduced power consumption and other benefits of SSD technology. In addition, some of the complexities of NAND-flash based SSDs will be discussed, including wear-leveling, expected life and others.

Topic 2: Storage Performance Comparisons for Microsoft Server Applications, Dennis Martin, Demartek

This is a continuation of the January presentation by Dennis Martin. Dennis will show the results of various tests using different storage devices for Microsoft server-based applications such as Exchange Server and SQL Server. Comparisons will include SSDs, SAS and SATA disk drives in various configurations.

Topic 3: Ask a Question

This is our time for anybody to ask a question. There's a good chance that another member present may have a solution.
